Church and cemetery

There is a fascinating little church with history dating back to the Middle Ages. Indeed it still has some of the wooden relics in the form of panels that can be seen and photographed within the church.

If you don't want straight images then there are plenty of interesting features both within the church and cemetery. A beautiful window that looks out across the Moors always catches my eye on a sunny day.

Textures on grave stones or odd things inside, all catch the photographers eye. Or you might choose to take a long view from the top of the nearby hill looking down to Widecombe and the Church.

We do have the permission of the Warden to be onsite so you should not meet with any resistance. The Church is always open to visitors so there may well be members of the public present - please respect them.

We will hold an in-person SW Region final TALK in July.

Walk Location

Church of St Pancras and cemetery, Widecombe in the Moor, Dartmoor

Walk Directions

Arriving at Widecombe in the Moor there are two car parks. Internet is very poor but you can go into the Cafe on the Green and jump on to their WIFI to pay using Ringo for the public car park.

I suggest that we meet at the Cafe on the Green to start our day between 11.00 to 11.30, then we will walk across to the Church to begin our photography.

We may all choose to return to the Cafe to enjoy lunch together at 13.30 - great food; highly recommended. After lunch those wishing to return to the church would be free to do so. However the official walk finishes at 14.00, so beyond that you do so at your own risk.

Accessibility

There is a tarmac path from the main entrance and a ramp to get into the church for those in wheel chairs. The cemetery is in part more difficult for wheelchair access, but parts can be viewed from the pathway. Stout shoes are recommended if you wish to walk on the grassed areas of the cemetery.

Public toilets are available in the car park.
