'Pep Ventosa' - Carlisle Cathedral

We will meet at the Castle Carpark (see below) within short walking distance to the cathedral. Those that come by public transport we will meet outside the cathedral cafe next door to the cathedral. There is no fee to visit the cathedral however donations (suggested £5) are most welcome. Tripods are not allowed in the cathedral. I have used a bean bag for low light or stacked images before. Drones are not allowed to be flown in the grounds.

Cathedral ceilingCarlisle Cathedral was founded in 1122 during the reign of Henry 1. It has seen many monarchs and changes to the building in the last 900 years. There is a magnificent east window behind the altar. A guilt canopy over the altar and choir stalls.

The present organ was made in 1856 and most recently restored in 1997 in its current position. There is 500 year old graffiti that can still be read in the wooden choir stalls.

We have a chance to wander around the cathedral at our leisure including the small museum. There is a cafe adjoining the cathedral where we can have some refreshments.

Carlisle market cross

After visiting the cathedral those that want to can walk the 200m to Carlisle centre where there is the market cross other historic buildings

Walk Directions

Meet at Castle Car park, off Devonshire walk at 11am. What three words ///share.paused.closer. The car park is pay and display either using a card or the parking app. I suggest 4hrs parking should be sufficient. From there we will make the 5 min walk to the cathedral and meet anyone who has taken public transport outside the cathedral cafe What three words : ///minds.foil.grades

Carlisle is accessible by train from most places. The railway station is about a 15min walk from the Cathedral.

We plan to spend up to 2hrs in the cathedral after which we could have a drink and refreshments in the cafe. (There are public toilets in the cafe)

After a drink those that want to can make the short walk (3mins) to the centre of Carlisle with a view to do some street photography or photograph the architecture.

In order to finish within the 4 hrs parking purchased (unless you purchase longer) I intend to be back at the carpark by 3pm.

Accessibility

The cathedral has a flat & level interior and is suitable for all levels of mobility including wheelchairs. There are volunteer staff within the cathedral who can advise of any areas that may be inaccessible or has stairs. (There is a short set of stairs down to the museum)
