Canterbury City Walk

Architecture and Built Environment
Walk Leader
John Gough
Sunday, March 24, 2024 - 14:30
Capacity

Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury is a city full of history. We shall be going past many famous and old sites with a lot of different architecture and environment.

  1. Christ Church Gate, meeting point
  2. The Old Buttermarket
  3. Beaney House of Art and Knowledge
  4. Eastbridge Hospital
  5. Old Weavers House
  6. Westgate Tower
  7. Westgate Gardens and Tower House
  8. Greyfriars Chapel and the Franciscan Gardens
  9. Dane John Mount and Gardens
  10. St. Augustine's Abbey (outside only)
  11. St Martin's Church
  12. Marlowe Theatre, last stop

We are NOT visiting the Cathedral or St. Augustine's Abbey as these are whole day tours in themselves and are also quite expensive to get in.

We shall arrive back at the Marlowe Theatre in time for dusk, when the lights should provide a good last image.

Ordinary walking shoes should suffice, and given it is March, warm clothing and rain protection.

I will send out an email to all participants with more details of what each place has to offer in terms of history.

My suggestion will be to do the talk post the event via Zoom as people are likely to have travelled quite significant distances. My suggestion for the Zoom talk is shown below. We will make a final decision on the day.

Walk Location

Walk Directions

We shall be meeting at Christchurch Gate at 1430. It is a the main entrance to the Cathedral and has recently been refurbished just in time for your images.

It is easy to find and walkable from the bus station and 2 railway stations. There are various car parks nearby as well, which allow for an easy walk to Christchurch Gate.

Accessibility

The distance covered will be about 2 miles, but the good news is it is pretty flat.
