South Gare

Coastal
Walk Leader
Carol Hudson
Sunday, September 10, 2023 - 10:30

South Gare is a promentary with a single road along the length of it. The harbour is known locally as Paddy's Hole. Images can be taken from the road but there are also tracks through the grasses and the opportunity to walk round the harbour and photograph the boats. The boatyard itself is quite interesting. There are a number of green Fishermen's Huts and a lighthouse at the end of the road as well as a shipwreck visible when the tide goes out. In the distance you can see the heavy industry of Hartlepool and Teesport plus the wind turbines out in the North Sea. There are lots of photographic opportunities and it is a unique place.

Good walking shoes are recommended. There are photo opportunities from the road itself but for those wishing to venture further afield there are steps down to the harbour and onto the dunes and beach.

Walk Directions

From Redcar  you take the A1042 road Kirkleatham Lane towards Warrenby and South Gare Road (private road). South Gare is a promontory with a single road along the length of it. Ignore the private road sign as you cross the railway tracks and park just beyond the harbour known as Paddy's Hole. The postcode is TS10 5NX. I plan to start in the café once everyone is assembled. There is a notice there advertising the 'sinkin ship café'.

Accessibility

Steps go down to the harbour but by going through the boatyard the harbour can be reached without any steps. You can venture a short way into the dunes on foot from the road and there is aslo a series of steps which lead down to the shore. It is a relatively compact area and it is up to the individual how much walking they wish to do.
