This is a National Trust property, which comprises a large 1920s house, the country home of the D’Oyly Carte family, and an extensive and varied garden. More information can be found on the website.

The garden is set in a valley, which runs down directly to the coast. Its sheltered position has its own frost-free microclimate, hence plants normally seen as tender or exotic can be grown outside there.
Some parts of the garden, especially near the house and the entrance at the top of the valley, are formal in their layout and planting. Other parts are more informal, with many different species of plants, including mature trees and huge bamboos.
There are many different paths, along both sides of the valley, and crossing its floor, which give a wide range of perspectives, including views down to the coast. (The South West Coast Path is accessible from the bottom of the garden.)
From a photographic perspective, there are opportunities to take in wider views, as well as tighter compositions or macro shots.
National Trust members with their membership cards can park and enter the property without charge. Those without have to pay £1.10 per hour for parking, and £17.00 to enter the garden and house.

We will meet in the café, just past the entrance lobby to the property at 10.30 am, when the site opens.
There is no public transport to the venue. It is 3 miles from Kingswear, from where you should take Lower Ferry road, turn right at toll house. Alternatively, it is 6 miles from Brixham, from where you should take A3022 towards Kingswear, and turn left at toll house. The lane from this point is narrow and can be busy, sometimes requiring reversing.
Accessibility
The garden is in a relatively steep sided valley. Paths can be rough, uneven, and have numerous steps. Robust walking shoes or boots should be worn.
The National Trust has attempted to make parts of the property, including the garden, more accessible. We suggest that anyone with mobility difficulties or challenges should contact them direct to establish the suitability of the venue.
