Tudeley Church (All Saints) and Capel Church (St Thomas à Becket)
All Saints’ Church at Tudeley is a small parish church that became internationally famous because Marc Chagall designed its complete set of stained-glass windows.
It's a small medieval church in a rural setting, with a simple interior and churchyard that contrast nicely with the drama of the Chagall glass at Tudeley.
St Thomas à Becket Church, Capel originated as a Norman-era chapel of ease, serving pilgrims traveling from Chichester to Canterbury's shrine of Thomas Becket, who was murdered in 1170—hence it's dedication.
Capel is good for exterior architectural studies, details, gravestones, and juxtaposing “ordinary” parish church fabric against Tudeley’s modern art.
The Plan for the day
Morning at Tudeley – Work mostly inside: stained glass at different exposures, reflections on the floor, abstract compositions, ICM and multiple exposures of the Chagall windows, then move outside for the small church in its landscape and the graveyard plan and stones.
Possible opportunity to eat together at lunchtime at a nearby pub or bring a packed lunch. we can discuss this once you have signed up for the walk.
After lunch on to Capel – Focus on exteriors, churchyard, doorways and small interior details; consider comparing how spiritual “feel” is conveyed in a heavily glazed, art‑driven space (Tudeley) versus a quieter medieval parish church.
Capel is about 3 miles / 5 km by road, a 7–10 minute drive from Tudely.
