Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Temple

We will start by visiting Samye Ling, established almost 60 years ago it was the first Tibetan Buddhist centre to be established in the West. There are extensive grounds with plenty to photograph outdoors, also a temple, which we hope to be able to enter. The temple’s schedule is not yet available, and should teachings be in progress we will need to stay outside.

We have been asked not to photograph people during our visit, and not to bring alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes or vapes.

The Grounds

From Samye Ling we will move on to the community café at Eskdalemuir for lunch.

After lunch we will visit Westerkirk Church. The current church was built in 1880s and features a stained-glass window donated by the parish to mark the Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. The church is on the site of a much older one, meaning that the graveyard has excellent photographic opportunities for anyone interested in architecture, culture, Wabi sabi or lichen photography.

Although there is a bus route to Eskdalemuir the timetables are unlikely to meet our needs. If anyone needs transport I could offer a lift from Lockerbie - which is easily accessible by train from North or South.

Samye Ling has flat paths throughout, with a staircase to enter the temple. Parking is limited at Westerkirk and we may need to share cars from Eskdalemuir. The graveyard is rough, with a short steep path between church and graveyard.
