St John the Baptist

A photography trip to Thaxted is less about ticking off shots and more about slowing down enough to notice. This village—and its magnificent church—rewards patience, light-watching, and curiosity.

Outside the church you might want to experiment with:

  • Shoot wide to establish the relationship between church and village
  • Experiment with foregrounds—fences, flowers, or winding paths
  • Wait for clouds to add drama behind the tall perpendicular tower

In the churchyard, time becomes visible. Leaning headstones, uneven ground, and lichen-covered surfaces offer endless opportunities for moody, storytelling shots—especially in mist or after rain.

Inside the church you might want to explore

  • Symmetry in the nave using central compositions
  • Shafts of sunlight cutting through dust-filled air
  • Contrasts between shadowed corners and bright windows
  • Fine details: worn wood grain, carved stone, aged metal

In Thaxted, you don’t just photograph a church—you document a conversation between time, place, and perception.
