Holme Fen Is a National Nature Reserve manged by Natural England. Covering 266 Ha it is the largest silver birch woodland in lowland England. As well as woodland there are a couple of meres and some acid heath grassland. It is home to many species which includes a significant number of fungi for which it is designated a site of special scientific interest.
This walk will takes us through the woodland, touching on the meres where we will observe a number of waterbirds. It is hopefully timed to coincide with the vibrant autumnal colours of the silver birch. There are many photo opportunities covering landscape, nature, abstract and creative generes to name a few.
The walk will take about 3 hours covering approximately 5 Km. We will take our time allowing as much time for photography as possible. The terrain is flat but uneven and sitting on damp peat soil, stout waterproof footwear is recommended. Bring any refreshments you need.
We will finish at about 13:00 and for those who want to I am proposing we visit the local pub, The Admiral Wells in Holme for a bite to eat and chat.
