Godrevy point

Coastal
Walk Leader
Ian Hampton
Saturday, October 14, 2023 - 12:00

Situated on the North Cornwall coast, Godreavy is famous for its lighthouse, surfing and wildlife.

The treacherous rocks. That hide under the water around the coastline will be exposed when we start our walk as low tide is at 12.00.

We will meet in the Rockpool café at 12.00. There is a charge for the car park. If you are a national trust member, you can park in their car park, which is a 5 min walk from the café.

From the meeting place, we will be heading in a northerly direction along the beach towards the lighthouse, where, providing the weather conditions are favourable, you can get some spectacular images as the waves crash over the rocks around the lighthouse. The rock pools and beaches will be exposed, showing the various rock formations.

We will then come up onto the coastal footpath, where we can carry on towards Mutton Cove, where a large colony of grey seals can be found. In addition to the seals, you will also have a view up the North Cornwall coast towards Basset Cove and Portreath.

As we come back down from Mutton Cove, there are some public toilets should you need them.

We will then make our way back down along the coastal footpath towards the meeting point. This time, we will be above the beach with the sand dunes on one side and the beach and sea below us on the other.

Once we return to the meeting point, we will go into the Rockpool café for refreshments.

For the second part of the walk, we will head in a southerly direction towards Gwithian. St Gothians nature reserve is right next to the Rockpool Café, where a plethora of wildlife can be seen.

A combination of fine sand and flat rocks on the beach can make for some interesting images. If the conditions are right, plenty of surfers will be out enjoying the water and providing the opportunity for action photography.

High tide is at 17.00, and sunset is at 19.30. Whilst it is impossible to say if we will have a good sunset at this stage, we can make that call on the day. If anybody wishes to stay, you can get some spectacular images as the sun sets across the bay as you look towards St Ives.
