Castletown, Isle of Man

As the ancient capital of the Isle of Man, Castletown retains a fascinating and photogenic townscape and streetscape contained within a small walkable area. The inner and outer harbour and sea defences, Castle Rushen, narrow streets, historic buildings and the localised use of limestone all add to the charm. As an architectural historian and author of a substantial book on Manx architecture, I am able to provide participants with a detailed guide as to the buildings, structures, features, details and special character of Castletown. 

I remember walking to school in Castletown in the 1960s, when the witches frequented the local pubs, mists swirled through the street, and the castle keep reeked of damp and despair. These atmospheric details seem long gone, but the charm remains. 

I am endeavouring to gain access to one or two buildings not normally accessible. If this becomes possible, I will notify the group and amend details as appropriate. 

Safe footwear is needed around the harbour and protective rainwear if it is wet or stormy, but otherwise, normal clothing is fine.
