Leicester

Leicester is not particularly well known for its architecture, however, once you start to explore and look beyond the obvious there are some interesting locations. From the historic old town through the brutalist concrete structures built in the ‘60s and ’70s to the shiny new developments popping up around the city.

Leicester is going through a period of change, and we’ll be photographing the old and the new – the regeneration alongside the historic parts of the city, whether you like the ancient or the modern there will be something for everyone to capture.

Although we have a geographic location in mind you can wander as far as you would like or stay in a smaller area and look at it in more detail, we will arrange a couple of coffee breaks where we can gather and compare notes.  The walk is open to everyone no matter how little or how much experience you have.

Walk Location

Walk Directions

Meet at the King Richard Statue opposite the King Richard visitor centre.

We will mainly be walking on pavements or footpaths. Places to photograph include

Statue

  • Leicester Cathedral and surrounding area
  • The Guildhall – entry for a small fee
  • Leicester Castle and surrounding areas
  • Jewry Wall area – although the actual museum is closed
  • The Magazine
  • De Montfort University buildings
  • Riverside - new buildings and old warehouses
  • Holiday Inn area
  • Great Central Station and new developments nearby
Accessibility

Everywhere is quite flat and easily accessible, there are a few steps on parts of the planned route, but these can be avoided, just think about how much you want to carry around for a few hours.

Our meeting point will be about a 15-minute walk from Leicester Railway Station and about 10/15 minutes from the bus stations. The nearest parking will be either at Highcross shopping centre or St Nicholas Circle – please check prices before you commit as they can be expensive when you stay a while. Newarke Street car park is another alternative. Street parking is free on Sundays if you can find a space nearby.

I will send out an email to all participants with more details closer to the event
