Glasgow's Ither River

Inland Water
Walk Leader

Wednesday, October 8, 2025 - 11:00
Capacity
12

A walk through Glasgow's industrial heritage along the banks of the River Kelvin - Glasgow's ither river which too often plays second fiddle to the Clyde. We'll start at the Botanic Gardens and make our way down via the Kelvin Walkway to Kelvinbridge Subway, then through Kelvingrove, past the Museum and Art Gallery, the Bishop Mill building and on to our end point – the modern Riverside Museum and the new bridge.

The distance covered is in the region of 3.5miles and is on solid footpath. Sturdy walking shoes or boots are advised.

A major photo opportunity comes from the river and river banks, and hopefully we may even have some decent autumn foliage. The area hosts an abundance of wildlife and it is not uncommon to spot a heron or even catch a quick glimpse of a kingfisher speeding by. And of course there are usually more squirrels than you can shake a stick at. There are, as indicated above, several buildings of interest along the river as well as some remnants of our industrial past. More modern aspects of urban life along the river include a wealth of statues and, if it your thing, some very colour street art.

Walk Directions

Parking is expensive in Glasgow now, and we have the double whammy of our start and end points being different. I would suggest either taking the train to Glasgow Central or Queen Street or using the Park and Ride facilities at Shields Road or Kelvinbridge. Then take the Subway to Hillhead and then walk the short distance to our start point at the main gates of Glasgow Botanic Gardens. The end point at Riverside is equidistant from Govan or Partick subway stations, although Govan involves less traffic. You can pre-book Subway tickets, and there is a discount if you have a Strathclyde issue senior bus pass.

Accessibility

We will be on a tarmac footway or on a standard pavement for the duration of the walk. There are some minor slopes but there are flatter alternatives should anyone feel those are not doable. The walkways are often used by less mobile members of the public and there are plenty of rest places along the way. We will never be far from main roads and public transport at any point. There are public toilets at our start point and end point.
