Poole away from the waterfront

TWT - Urban - Poole

Approx 4km therefore flat comfortable shoes is a suggestion.  Hiking boots are not necessary.  If it decides to rain! waterproof clothing as there is very little shelter against the rain.

All day walk around Poole

The first port in Poole harbour was established by the Romans after the invasion in AD43, by Saxon times there were two or more ports in the harbour.

By the 15th century, Poole had become a prosperous town.

Over the years the town side of Poole has been demolished and rebuilt several times. Which included the Poole Generating Sataion opened 1949  demolished 1993.

There has been at least three Hamworthy Bridges (starting in 1833/5) and still operational today. Which was joined by the Twin Sails Bridge in 2012, to cope with the increasing traffic.

Further inland are the RNLI sheds where they build their vessels, sitting next to Sunseeker showrooms.

The Lighthouse theatre built in 1978 displays the architecture of the time and bus station and shopping centre unfortunately show their age. (Plans to move the bus/coach and railway station to a new site have been talked about for the last ten years). So this is a chance of a historical shot.

My plan is to meet at Poole Railway Station (outside if the weather is ok), I then intend walk around some of the sites mentioned above, but not the waterfront. We will also venture up one of the building for a birds eye view of Poole.  Stopping half way through the day for a comfort break in a cafe were the Old Town meets the New Town.

The walk is reasonable flat and there is wheelchair access the whole way.

If you are coming by car the are lots of carparks in Poole but I would suggest logging on to https://www.justpark.com/uk and booking a days parking in Asda Store West Quay Road BH15 1JQ which is a lot cheaper than BCP charges.
