The Woods of the Mendip Hills

The Kings Wood

There are many wooded areas within the Mendip Hill National Landscape (formally Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

Some are very old with lots of deciduous trees, others are Stockhill Beachmore modern coniferous plantations. We will visit two, maybe three, sites, depending on how the day goes. That will afford the opportunity for a variety of woodland images.

Stockhill

A pub lunch is planned for in between the first and second woods, The pub caters for a wide variety of diets and has good 'welfare' facilities.

Previous visits to these woods with the RPS Landscape Group have seen some interesting images being made using classic woodland, ICM, ME and macro techniques; it is amazing how a group of people can see such different things despite being in the samemacro place at the same time.

Finishing time will depend on whether the group is up for a  third location, time available, and, inevitably, the weather. Whatever happens, sunset is at 18:15 and we need to be out of the woods and our way home before then.

Please note; the follow up talk is pencilled in for a physical meeting on 29 October, but final decision will be made with participants nearer the time.

CHANGE OF MEETING PLACE

The revised 09:30 start point is the Blackmoor Nature Reserve, near Charterhouse; same time, different place.

The car park is signed, but it is easy to drive past. Public transport is not really an option with bus services being extremely infrequent. An 08:30 pick up at Bath Spa railway station, with return at the end of the day, could be arranged with the walk leader.

The woods there are a short walk form the carpark but they were looking good and the paths are mostly dry.

  • Google Maps has it as: Blackmoor Reserve car park: https://maps.app.goo.gl/qVz8F3HFniqjc5Cg8

Accessibility

This walk is not really suitable for those with limited mobility.

The first and second woods have some level accessible paths but the main photographic opportunities involve longer walks into the woods (around two kilometres) with some quite steep paths/inclines. There are no major risks but we will be on stony/muddy paths with uneven surfaces and the odd rock sticking up.

Good robust walking footwear is a must, and a walking pole is recommended, if you are at all unsteady on your feet.
