Trewithen is an early Georgian house and privately owned home, set in 30 acres of subtropical gardens. Meaning ‘house of the trees’ Trewithen has 30 acres of woodland gardens and over 200 acres of parkland featuring Champion Trees and Cornish Champions which can be admired while wandering beneath the canopy. Recognised as a ‘Garden of Excellence’ by the International Camellia Society, Trewithen showcases vibrant spring displays, as well as botanical rarities brought back from Plant Hunters’ expeditions.
The owner of the estate in the early 1900's, George Johnstone, sponsored some of the great plant hunting expeditions to the Himalayas and China and introduced a wealth of new species. The South Lawn is considered his gardening masterpiece. Flanked on both sides by rare rhododendrons and magnolias, the lawn stretches out from the house for over 120 yards. The spring planting makes the South Lawn particularly colourful from February to July.
One of my favourite areas is the Walled garden.
Once kept private it now aims to create space for silent reflection. The red-brick walls protect border plants such as Welsh poppies and photinia. There are also several new features within the gardens such as the Henheadhow Circle and the Magnolia fountain.
